Web Site Maintenance
We're not fussy. Even if we didn't build it - we'll look after it for you.
We found that many businesses find it hard to get their original web design supplier to make small changes to their websites. If you're having this problem, please get in touch - we should be able to help!
Things change
It's inevitable that at some point you'll need to update your website. These could be minor text changes, the addition new photos or even entire new pages.
Sometimes the changes you want to make might not be that obvious to the website visitor, but make an overall improvement. For example:
- You might want to update the HTML of your pages to comply with current internet standards.
This will help your ranking in the search engines. Poorly constructed pages can get penalised. - Retro-fit installation of a web traffic tracking system
We implement Google Analytics tracking on every website we produce. It's vital to know how your website is being used. Amazingly, some other web designers launch websites without any kind of tracking!
Take a look at our Search Engine Optimisation page for more information about web coding standards and Google Analytics.
The process
The process for updating your website depends on how its been constructed. Unless its been built with a Content Management System (CMS), the changes will need to be made directly to the files that make up your web site. This means accessing the server where your web site is hosted.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) login information is needed to access the server - which you should have somewhere safe. Usually these are emailed to you when you create your hosting account. If we host your website, then we already have this information, but if your site is hosted elsewhere - you'll need to dig these out!
Once we have the FTP details, we log in to your server, download the files to our own servers, make the changes and upload the changed files back to your server.
Time gentlemen...please!
If you're planning a core structural change or a complete design overhaul, it might be more cost effective to start from scratch. Sometimes it can be quicker to do this than to try to get an imperfect solution to fit your new requirements.
